Miscarriage or Pregnancy loss
Pregnancy loss, also referred to as miscarriage or spontaneous abortion, is defined differently around the world, but in general a baby who dies before 20 weeks of pregnancy is referred to as a miscarriage, and babies who die at or after 20 weeks are stillbirths. Early pregnancy loss, which occurs in the first trimester, is the most common type. Miscarriage and infant loss can often put devastating stress on parents leading to long-lasting mental health effects which can last for months or years – even when they have gone on to have healthy babies. Women may not have a living baby, but she still had to give birth. No matter the gestation, this takes a significant toll on her body for weeks and often months after the loss. The dreams you had of holding your baby and watching him grow are gone. So much of what you wanted and planned for are lost. Not only is the loss traumatic, but the lack of support from the medical providers and family can compound the trauma leading to symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Many parents turn to IMWIDU for support, finding hope and comfort through sharing their story and being able to say the child's name without fear of others turning away when the tears come.
