How do I volunteer for IMWIDU ?

As an organisation dealing with an extremely sensitive subject, we need to be extra cautious at every step that we take. This means that we also ask all volunteers to go through the following selection and safer recruitment process before they can start volunteering.

1) Application form

Complete our online volunteer application form – it should only take a few minutes

2) Informal interview

Once we have received your application form, we will invite you to meet us (either face-to-face or via Zoom). This is so that we can find out more about you, and you can ask us any questions you have about volunteering.

3) Reference check

If your interview goes well, we will ask you for details of two people who can provide a reference for you.

The process to be considered for volunteering starts with the completion of a Volunteer Interest Application, followed by an interview and an invitation to training. The training provides insight into the demands of a volunteer and allows individuals and the organisation to confirm mutual compatibility. All volunteers will be required to pass a background check.

Essential qualities

We wish to attract the best professionals to donate their time and talent.
All volunteers are screened and evaluated on their appropriateness to their role

• Professional, Compassionate, Warm and Caring
• Strong listening skills, non-judgmental and positive
• Outstanding interpersonal skills
• Must be at least 18 years old
• English, Hindi or any other Indian Language an asset
• Personal resilience and exercise ongoing self-care
• Punctual and reliable
• Open to receiving feedback from supervisor/manager
• Successfully completes the IMWIDU volunteer training program
• Many of our volunteers have personal experience of bereavement but this is not essential.

Time commitment

We ask for a minimum commitment of 4 hours a week.

IMWIDU Volunteer offers psychosocial support to the clients. Here are just a few of the ways you can give of yourself:

Helpline Volunteers

For many callers asking for help, having someone to talk to will make a real difference. Our volunteers are there to listen, provide emotional support, and talk the information available

Premises Volunteer

IMWIDU operates from volunteer premises in all the locations and does not spend donors money on rent and maintenance.

Teaching Volunteer

Volunteers in this category will be assigned roles where they will be tutoring or teaching various subjects to children who do not have access to normal schooling due to poverty.

Research student Volunteer

Students doing research work can help us with insights in the area we work thru their research work.

Volunteer drivers

Many of our clients are not in position to drive and would need help from someone. Many of our clients are not in position to drive and would need help from someone.

Corporate Volunteer

Corporate employee groups can help volunteers. This is a great team building exercise for employee groups.

Shopping Volunteer

For many of our clients even going for grocery shopping is difficult. We are in need of volunteers who can pick up grocery orders once a week after the client places the order with a local store.

Medical assistance Companions

Volunteers accompany the clients to medical appointments.

Senior and Retired Volunteer

Volunteers assist clients and their families by providing companionship over the phone, online, in-person and may educate and assist on different matters like pension, claims, banking etc.

Events Coordinator

Volunteers spend minimum 3-4 hours once a month, to assist with the planning and execution of social programs for our clients

Office Volunteer

Office Volunteers assist IMWIDU team with IT support, Web Updates, Public Relations, Community Relations, Screening & Selection, client and volunteer data, administration related including mailings, data entry, filing.

Musicians

If you have a musical talent and can spare time once a month for our programs, you will help us bring a smile on our client’s face

Phone Volunteer

Volunteers provide regular weekly or daily telephone calls to the clients and often become a telephone friend; a resource and confidante to the client. Calls can be made in the comfort of your own home, office.

Collection Coordinator

Friendly Visitors

If you have a minimum of 2 hours a week to spare, you can make a huge difference to our clients seeking companionship by visiting him or her in their own home! Clients and volunteers are matched with someone of similar interests and location.

Volunteer fundraisers

To help raise awareness and funds thru events and activities, so that we can reach even more people when they need us most. Opportunities also exist for leadership positions in Trustees and our Board members.

Volunteer-Duties and Responsibilities

• Is aware of, understands and adheres to IMWIDU By-Laws, Policies and Procedures, and the directions set to the organization by the IMWIDU Board and Executive Director.
• Consults previously with the Executive Director, Volunteer Coordinator or designate in any issues or decision making that might impact the current directions of the organization.
• Ensures that due diligence, proper procedure, code of conduct and respect to the organizational chain of command are complied with and reinforced in all relations with governance, staff, clients, volunteers, donors, suppliers, health care partners, and any other stakeholders of IMWIDU.
• Represents IMWIDU in a professional and positive manner.
• Understands and acts in a manner that supports the Mission, Vision and Values of IMWIDU.
• Contributes to a friendly environment in which all IMWIDU Volunteers and stakeholders work cooperatively.
• Provides information, support and companionship to IMWIDU clients.
• Communicates with clients at designated intervals via phone or email or other supported methods.
• Facilitates one-on-one or group sessions as scheduled by IMWIDU.
• Maintains client forms which include (depending on the role of the Volunteer) – Intake, Assessment, Confidentiality Agreement, Consent to Disclose Heath Information, Case Notes, Individual Session Report, Group Session Report.
• Maintains confidentiality.
• Provides required documentation of time and activity.
• Attends education and support meetings.
• Facilitates community awareness and support of IMWIDU.
• Attends Volunteer training programs.
• Attends regular Volunteer meetings.
• Assist with fundraising and special events.
• Share and Promote IMWIDU in the community, with friends, family, and co-workers and encourage them to get involved.
